Things to know about the Qatar training facility at an Air Force base in Idaho

After U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced an agreement with Qatar to build facilities at Idaho’s Mountain Home Air Force Base, social media erupted over fears of a “foreign base.” Air Force officials said the project is not a separate base but training and maintenance buildings for Qatari F-15QA crews, funded by Qatar and secured by U.S. personnel. The base, already home to U.S. squadrons and Singapore’s 428th, offers ample airspace for training. Talks began after Qatar’s 2017 jet purchase; an environmental review finished in 2022. Critics, including Laura Loomer, voiced opposition.
