MIT became the first school to reject a Trump administration offer of federal funding tied to a compact, saying the conditions would curb its independence and free expression. In a letter, President Sally Kornbluth cited MIT’s commitment to merit, need‑blind admissions and scientific funding based on merit alone. The proposal to nine universities sought limits on transgender students’ restroom and sports access, caps on international undergraduates, civics instruction and vetting of foreign students, and a five‑year tuition freeze for Americans, in exchange for grant priority and White House access. Most schools are still reviewing; Texas responded. DOE didn't comment.
