A newly-elected mayor in western Germany, Iris Stalzer, has been critically injured after being stabbed near her home. Stalzer, a member of the Social Democratic party, was attacked on Tuesday. Her adopted teenage children made an emergency call. Police are investigating all possibilities, including a family connection, noting a prior domestic violence incident at the residence. Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the act and expressed fears for her life.
