President Trump is proceeding with plans to deploy National Guard members to Portland and Chicago to combat crime and protect federal officers. While 300 Illinois National Guard members were authorized for Chicago, a federal judge temporarily blocked the deployment of Oregon's Guard to Portland. Despite this, California National Guard members have been sent to Oregon. Governors of both states, who oppose the deployments, view them as unnecessary escalations and authoritarian. The White House states the deployments are to counter "violent riots and lawlessness."
