Assata Shakur, a prominent Black liberation activist who found political asylum in Cuba after escaping a U.S. prison sentence for murder, has died in Havana at age 74. Her death was attributed to "health conditions and advanced age." Shakur, born Joanne Deborah Chesimard, was a fugitive for decades, sought by U.S. authorities for the 1973 killing of a New Jersey state trooper.
