Deportation: West Africans Held in Straitjackets

Read, Watch or Listen

A lawsuit filed in Washington alleges that five West African migrants deported from the U.S. to Ghana were shackled, restrained in straitjackets for 16 hours on a military plane, and held in squalid conditions in Ghana. The migrants, none of whom are from Ghana, were sent despite having been granted fear-based relief from deportation to their home countries. The lawsuit, filed by Asian Americans Advancing Justice, accuses the U.S. government of using Ghana to circumvent immigration rulings and demands an immediate halt to such deportations. The Homeland Security Department and ICE haven't commented.
