Australia has approved a world-first chlamydia vaccine for koalas. Developed over 10 years by University of the Sunshine Coast researchers, the single-dose vaccine protects against the disease responsible for half of koala deaths. Trials showed a 65% reduction in mortality and the vaccine reduces infection, prevents disease progression, and can even reverse existing symptoms. This breakthrough offers crucial protection for the endangered marsupial, combating chlamydia which causes infertility, blindness, and death in koalas.
