Swedish Mine Threatens Sami Reindeer Herders | JQJO

In northern Sweden, Sami reindeer herders face a bleak future due to expanding iron ore and rare-earth mineral mines that disrupt traditional reindeer migration routes. The Per Geijer mine, Europe's largest rare-earth mineral deposit, threatens to completely cut off crucial routes for the Gabna Sami village, jeopardizing their way of life and Sami culture, intrinsically linked to reindeer herding. Climate change exacerbates the issue with warmer temperatures and freezing rain impacting lichen availability. While mining companies seek solutions, the Sami fear the loss of their ancestral lands and traditions.
