The Deep Random Survey telescope recently discovered 3I/ATLAS, the largest and brightest interstellar comet yet observed. NASA's SPHEREx observatory detected significant carbon dioxide and water ice, suggesting a composition similar to comets within our solar system. This indicates the comet may have originated from within the Milky Way's thick disk and is possibly two to three times older than our solar system's comets. Scientists are using SPHEREx's unique capabilities to map the comet's chemical makeup and expect further sublimation as it nears the sun in late October.
