Judge blocks deportation of Guatemalan migrant children as flights were ready to take off

A federal judge halted the Trump administration's attempt to deport hundreds of unaccompanied migrant children to Guatemala without deportation orders. The judge issued a temporary restraining order after lawyers raised concerns about the rushed deportations, which were underway when the order was issued. The government argued it was facilitating reunifications with relatives in Guatemala, while lawyers for the children countered that this violated U.S. law protecting minors from swift deportation and that the children faced potential harm if returned. The judge's order prevents deportations of unaccompanied children without deportation orders for 14 days.
