At least two deaths in Louisiana and Florida are linked to Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria found in warm coastal waters. This year, Louisiana saw 22 cases, a sharp increase from the yearly average of seven over the past decade. The bacteria is spread through raw or undercooked seafood, especially oysters, and exposure of open wounds to seawater. Climate change is exacerbating the problem, leading to warmer waters and increased plankton, creating ideal conditions for the bacteria's growth. Symptoms include gastrointestinal illness, wound infection, or blood poisoning; about 20% of those infected die.
