With new in-house models, Microsoft lays the groundwork for independence from OpenAI

Microsoft unveiled two new AI models, MAI-Voice-1 for high-quality speech generation and MAI-1-preview, a large language model powering its Copilot chatbot. MAI-1-preview, trained on 15,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, is significantly larger than previous models. This move suggests a potential shift from reliance on OpenAI, despite Microsoft's substantial investment, hinting at possible tensions between the two companies. While Copilot currently uses OpenAI's models, Microsoft's new models indicate a growing internal AI capability.
