Gulf Stream ‘could collapse in our lifetime,’ warns EU climate chief

A new study suggests the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a major ocean current including the Gulf Stream, could collapse as early as 2055 under a high-emissions scenario, or 2063 under a moderate emissions scenario. This collapse would dramatically lower temperatures in Northern Europe, reduce rainfall, and severely impact agriculture. The study, using 25 climate models, contrasts with previous research that deemed a collapse unlikely this century. European officials now consider the AMOC's potential shutdown a national security concern due to its potential devastating effects.
