France returns skull of monarch killed during colonial era

France returned the skull of Madagascar's King Toera, killed during a 19th-century colonial war, to his descendants. This repatriation, facilitated by a new French law, followed years of pressure from the Malagasy government and the king's family. While DNA evidence was inconclusive, a Sakalava spiritual leader confirmed the skull's identity. The return is a significant symbolic gesture addressing past colonial injustices, highlighting the ongoing effort to return thousands of human remains held in French museums.
