Over the past week, the US military has intercepted Russian spy planes three times near Alaska. These planes, including an IL-20 Coot reconnaissance aircraft, flew within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), international airspace monitored by the US and Canada. While not considered a threat, the planes are required to identify themselves. This activity follows similar incidents this year and in 2024, including one instance where a Russian jet's actions were deemed unsafe. NORAD uses various methods to detect and track aircraft, maintaining readiness to defend North America.
