Trump backs off higher tariffs for E.U. pharma and chips

The US and EU reached a trade agreement limiting tariffs on pharmaceuticals, lumber, and semiconductors to 15%, down from potential rates as high as 250%. The deal includes the US rolling back tariffs on certain goods starting September 1st. While the EU secured a cap on tariffs, it didn't achieve all its objectives, notably for the wine and spirits industry. The agreement also involves expected EU purchases of US energy and AI technology, totaling $750 billion and $40 billion respectively, and anticipated European investments of $600 billion in US strategic sectors by 2028. Auto tariff reductions are contingent on EU legislative action. Both sides will also cooperate on critical mineral and digital trade barriers.
