What's the difference between a llama and an alpaca?

Llamas and alpacas, both camelids originating in North America, are often confused. Key differences include size (llamas are twice as heavy), ear and face shape (llamas have banana-shaped ears and longer faces), and hair texture (llamas have coarse hair, alpacas have soft, silky hair). Llamas are used as pack animals due to their strength, while alpacas are prized for their luxurious fiber. Temperament also differs, with llamas being more protective and alpacas more timid.
