Two US warships deployed near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea following a collision between two Chinese ships while attempting to expel a Philippine vessel. The incident, which caused damage to both Chinese ships, raised concerns about maritime safety. The US deployment is part of its freedom-of-navigation operations, which have previously resulted in similar close encounters with Chinese forces. Several countries, including Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, expressed alarm over the dangerous maneuvers, urging de-escalation and adherence to international law. A Chinese fighter jet also conducted dangerous maneuvers near a Philippine surveillance plane in the area.
