Israel's announcement of a settlement project in the West Bank sparks controversy

Israel's far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, announced the advancement of a controversial settlement construction project (E1) in the West Bank, expected to receive final approval on August 20. This project, east of Jerusalem, will effectively sever the connection between major Palestinian cities, Ramallah and Bethlehem, jeopardizing the possibility of a Palestinian state. The move is condemned by Palestinians and international rights groups as an obstacle to peace and a violation of international law. Smotrich's statement comes as several countries plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September.
