The Perseid meteor shower, considered the best of the year by NASA, peaked on Tuesday night but remains visible until August 23rd. At its peak, viewers could see up to 100 meteors per hour. Those who missed the peak can still see meteors in dark areas before sunrise by looking northeast. The shower originates from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle and is named after the constellation Perseus. Meteor showers occur when Earth crosses a comet's debris trail, creating visible streaks in the atmosphere.
