A rapidly spreading cottontail papilloma virus (CRPV) is causing rabbits in Colorado and other areas to develop black, tentacle-like growths on their heads. These "Frankenbunnies," as some call them, are not a threat to humans or pets, but the growths can impede the rabbits' ability to eat, leading to starvation. The virus, spread by fleas and ticks, is more severe in domestic rabbits, potentially causing skin cancer. Wildlife experts advise against approaching infected animals, and while there's no cure, veterinarians can surgically remove the growths.
