Reports of wild rabbits with unusual black horn-like growths in northern Colorado are attributed to the Shope papilloma virus (SPV). Spread by insects, SPV causes wart-like growths on rabbits' faces, but poses no threat to humans or other animals. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) received numerous reports, though likely depicting the same infected rabbits. While rabbits generally remain healthy, CPW advises avoiding contact. Euthanasia isn't recommended unless eating/drinking is impaired.
