Second person dies in Bay County this year from vibrio vulnificus

Two deaths in Bay County, Florida, are attributed to Vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria causing necrotizing fasciitis, often mistakenly called 'flesh-eating' disease. Florida has seen 16 cases and 5 deaths in 2025 from this bacteria, which thrives in warm brackish water. Infection typically occurs through raw seafood consumption or open wounds exposed to contaminated water. Those with pre-existing conditions are at higher risk. The bacteria's increasing prevalence is linked to rising water temperatures.
