A Missouri resident is in critical condition after contracting Naegleria fowleri, a rare brain-eating amoeba, likely from swimming at Lake of the Ozarks. The amoeba, found in warm freshwater, causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a deadly brain infection. While historically rare, climate change-related warming waters and flooding may increase infection rates. This is the second confirmed case in Missouri since 1987. Investigations into the source of infection are underway.
