Judge orders administration to restore UCLA research grants

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to reinstate some of the 800 federal science research grants suspended at UCLA. The judge ruled that the suspensions violated a previous injunction, deeming them arbitrary and capricious. The suspensions, totaling $584 million, stemmed from alleged Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) violations. The Trump administration had offered a $1 billion settlement in exchange for restoring the grants and banning overnight demonstrations. The University of California and Governor Newsom have strongly opposed the settlement, arguing it is an attempt at extortion.
