Designer apologizes for Adidas sandal design

Mexican-American designer Willy Chavarria and Adidas apologized for a sandal design resembling traditional Zapotec huaraches from Oaxaca, Mexico. Mexican authorities accused them of cultural appropriation for copying the design without permission. Chavarria stated the design intended to honor Oaxacan culture, but admitted the shoe's development lacked proper collaboration with the Indigenous community. Adidas also apologized and plans to discuss reparations with local officials, highlighting a growing concern over protecting Mexican designs from appropriation by major brands.
