Gruden's legal team argued the NFL's arbitration process didn't apply as he wasn't an employee when he wrote the emails at the heart of the case, which contained offensive language. The emails, leaked during an NFL investigation, led to Gruden's resignation from the Raiders in 2021. Gruden alleges the NFL maliciously leaked the emails to damage his reputation. The NFL could appeal.
