Astronomers spot the 'Eye of Sauron' in deep space

Astronomers have solved a decade-long mystery surrounding the blazar PKS 1424+240, a source of unusually bright high-energy gamma rays and neutrinos. Using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), they captured a stunning image revealing a near-perfect toroidal magnetic field within the blazar's jet. This 'Eye of Sauron'-like structure, almost perfectly aligned with Earth, explains the amplified brightness due to relativistic effects. The discovery confirms that supermassive black holes accelerate both electrons and protons, generating high-energy neutrinos, marking a significant advance in multimessenger astronomy.
