Adidas Apologizes for Cultural Appropriation of Oaxaca Shoe Design

Adidas apologized for cultural appropriation in its "Oaxaca Slip-On" shoe, designed by Willy Chavarria and inspired by traditional huarache sandals from Villa Hidalgo Yalalag, Oaxaca. The design sparked criticism in Mexico, including from President Sheinbaum, who highlighted the unauthorized use of Indigenous intellectual property. Adidas acknowledged the issue, stating its commitment to respectful dialogue with the community. Mexico's 2022 legislation protects Indigenous intellectual property, making unauthorized use punishable by fines or imprisonment. Chavarria also issued a public apology.
