Mexican-American designer Willy Chavarria and Adidas apologized for a sandal design resembling traditional Zapotec huaraches from Oaxaca, Mexico. Mexican authorities accused them of cultural appropriation for copying the design without permission. Chavarria stated the design intended to honor Oaxaca's culture but acknowledged failing to collaborate with the community. Adidas also apologized and seeks dialogue with local officials to address the issue and protect Indigenous designs. Mexican authorities plan to strengthen laws protecting Mexican designs.
