Italy OK's $15.5 billion construction of world's longest suspension bridge, from Sicily to mainland

Italy approved the construction of the Strait of Messina Bridge, a 13.5 billion euro project that will become the world's longest suspension bridge. The project, revived by Premier Giorgia Meloni's administration, faced delays and controversies over seismic concerns, environmental impacts, and mafia involvement. Despite opposition from environmental groups and academics, the bridge, expected to be completed by 2032, is seen as an economic boost for southern Italy and a strategic asset for NATO. Construction is slated to begin next year, with the WeBuild consortium leading the effort.
