Ultra-processed food slows weight loss even on healthy diet, study finds

A new University College London study reveals that losing weight is harder on an ultra-processed food (UPF) diet compared to a minimally processed food (MPF) diet, even with balanced eating. Participants following government dietary advice for eight weeks lost an average of 1% of their weight on a UPF diet (e.g., granola bars, ready meals) versus 2% on an MPF diet (e.g., homemade meals). Researchers suggest this highlights the impact of food processing on health and the need for policy shifts towards addressing environmental obesity drivers. The study could influence upcoming US dietary guidelines and prompt a reassessment of UPF's role in national recommendations in both the UK and US.
