The University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa launched an anti-poaching initiative. Rhinos are injected with harmless radioactive isotopes, detectable by customs, to deter poaching. Initial trials showed the isotopes are safe for rhinos and effective in triggering radiation detectors at borders, even within shipping containers. This aims to combat the decline in rhino population, with South Africa losing approximately 500 rhinos annually to poaching. Private and public rhino owners are encouraged to participate.
