A shocking record: Lightning bolt stretched 515 miles, crossed three states

A 2017 megaflash lightning bolt, spanning 515 miles across the US, has been officially recognized as a new world record by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This surpasses the previous record by 38 miles. The megaflash, detected using advanced satellite technology, occurred during a massive storm and highlights the dangers of severe thunderstorms. While these events are rare and mostly high in the atmosphere, they pose risks to aviation and can trigger wildfires. Scientists expect to discover even longer megaflashes as technology improves.
