Newman to be declared Doctor of the Church

The Vatican announced that St. John Henry Newman, a 19th-century English theologian, will be declared a Doctor of the Church, the 38th saint to receive this title. Pope Leo XIV confirmed the decision, following the recommendation of the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. Newman, who converted from Anglicanism to Catholicism, is a significant figure for both English Catholics and Anglicans. His influential writings and pastoral work led to his beatification and canonization before this latest honor. The Vatican has not yet announced the date of the formal declaration or the title's Latin wording.
