Sotheby's has returned a set of ancient jewels, believed linked to Buddha's remains, to India after facing pressure from the Indian government and Buddhist leaders. The Piprahwa Gems, unearthed in 1898, were due to be auctioned but were instead acquired by the Godrej Industries Group. The jewels will now be displayed publicly in India. Prime Minister Modi hailed the return as a victory for India's cultural heritage. The gems, comprising thousands of pearls, rubies, sapphires, and gold, were part of a larger collection, with some relics already housed in Indian museums.
