Colbert's Cancellation Mirrors Smothers Brothers' Fate | JQJO

CBS's cancellation of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" echoes the 1969 cancellation of "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour." Both shows, known for their sharp political satire and criticism of presidents (Johnson and Nixon, then Trump), were highly rated but ultimately removed from the air due to pressure from the White House. The Smothers Brothers' cancellation sparked debate about censorship, and Colbert's cancellation raises similar concerns about the future of political comedy on network television. Despite cancellations, political satire consistently adapts and endures, evolving to new platforms.
