After nearly two decades without a sighting, the world's smallest snake, the Barbados threadsnake (Tetracheilostoma carlae), has been rediscovered in Barbados. Connor Blades, a project officer with the Ministry of Environment, found the tiny snake, which can fit on a coin, during an ecological survey. The rediscovery, announced by Re:wild, is significant as the species was considered Critically Endangered and had only been seen a handful of times since 1889. Scientists hope this rediscovery will raise awareness and help protect the snake's habitat, which is under threat due to deforestation on the island.
