‘A Revolution in Drone Warfare’: As Russian Fiber-Optic Drones Flood the Battlefield, Ukraine Scrambles to Catch Up

Ukraine is racing to develop fiber-optic drones to counter Russia's use of the technology, which has given Moscow a significant advantage in the ongoing conflict. A Ukrainian company, Technohawk, is field-testing its own fiber-optic drone, the Shtorm, designed to overcome electronic warfare jamming. While Ukraine possesses high-quality drone technology, scaling up production and reducing reliance on Chinese components remains a challenge. The Russian fiber-optic drones, though effective, are vulnerable to being shot down due to their size and reduced payload capacity. Ukraine is working to address this technological gap and improve its drone capabilities.
