Flesh-Eating Bacteria Have Already Killed Four People in Florida This Year

Four deaths in Florida this year are attributed to Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria found in warm saltwater. The bacteria, causing vibriosis, can enter through open wounds or raw shellfish consumption. While infections are rare, about 20% are fatal, with those having weakened immune systems at higher risk. Florida saw a record 19 deaths in 2024, linked to increased hurricane activity and rising temperatures, impacting salinity and bacterial growth. Experts warn against entering warm water with open wounds and consuming raw shellfish.
