Flesh eating bacteria kills 1 person in South Florida in 2025

Florida reports one death and 11 cases of Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria, as of July 11, 2025. The bacteria, found in warm seawater, is commonly contracted through raw shellfish consumption or contact with contaminated water via open wounds. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The Florida Department of Health advises thoroughly cooking shellfish, avoiding raw shellfish, and protecting open wounds from seawater to prevent infection.
