How dams upriver saved downtown Austin from flooding

Austin, Texas, is experiencing a dramatic shift from severe drought to rising reservoir levels. The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) opened floodgates on Lake Buchanan for the first time since 2019 to manage the excess water. While historically prone to devastating floods, the current reservoir levels, aided by a system of dams and reservoirs, are preventing widespread flooding. However, experts warn that future extreme rainfall could overwhelm the current system, leading to catastrophic flooding in the densely populated area.
