After widespread slowdown, Port of LA import surge is a sign Trump’s ‘whipsaw’ tariffs sparked ‘one last’ stockpiling push, executive director says

The Port of Los Angeles reported its busiest June ever, handling 892,000 container units, an 8% increase year-over-year. This surge, however, is attributed to businesses stockpiling goods ahead of potential new tariffs, rather than sustained growth. Executive Director Gene Seroka expects a slowdown in August due to the upcoming trade deadline and anticipates further uncertainty as the Trump administration's tariff policies remain unclear. Experts note that companies are employing various strategies, including shifting suppliers and stockpiling to mitigate the risk of fluctuating tariffs.
