US commander says China has failed to coerce rivals in South China Sea

US Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Stephen Koehler asserted that China's aggressive tactics in the South China Sea have failed to intimidate claimant states. He highlighted the continued offshore operations of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, and the Philippines' bold exposure of Chinese actions. Koehler emphasized the US commitment to deterring aggression and upholding freedom of navigation, alongside allies. A forum marking the 9th anniversary of a ruling invalidating China's claims underscored the continued defiance of international law by China, with the US reiterating its defense commitment to the Philippines under a mutual defense treaty. Despite tensions, diplomatic talks between China and the Philippines are planned.
