A massive algae bloom, known as mucilage, is again threatening the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul. First appearing in summer 2021, the sticky substance suffocates marine life. While declared under control, the mucilage has persisted beneath the surface and is now resurfacing, posing a renewed environmental threat to the region's ecosystem and the 18 million Istanbul residents.
