Treasury posts unexpected surplus in June as tariff receipts surge

The US government reported a $27 billion surplus in June, a turnaround from May's $316 billion deficit. Increased tariffs, reaching $27 billion for the month, significantly boosted receipts. However, the fiscal year-to-date deficit remains at $1.34 trillion, a 5% increase year-on-year. Higher interest payments on the national debt continue to be a major financial challenge, with net interest totaling $84 billion in June. This June surplus is the first since 2017. The upcoming "big beautiful" spending bill is projected to add trillions to the national debt.
