The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled against Russia, finding Moscow responsible for human rights abuses in Ukraine, including the downing of MH17. This is the first time an international court has held Russia accountable for these actions since the 2022 invasion. The ECHR's decisions, stemming from four cases brought by Ukraine and the Netherlands, cite violations of international humanitarian law, including the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. While largely symbolic due to Russia's expulsion from the ECHR, Ukraine hailed the rulings as a victory. Families of MH17 victims also see the judgment as a significant step in their pursuit of justice.
