Measles cases reach highest point since the disease was eliminated from U.S. in 2000

Measles cases in the US have surged to their highest level since 2000, reaching 1,277 this year. This includes the first measles deaths in a decade, all in unvaccinated individuals. Low vaccination rates, particularly in West Texas, fueled a major outbreak. The resurgence is linked to declining vaccination rates nationally and globally, and misinformation campaigns hindering public health efforts. The cost to address each case is estimated at $30,000-$50,000, exacerbating the problem, especially given reduced Covid funding. Experts emphasize the 97% effectiveness of the MMR vaccine and warn against misinformation promoting alternative treatments.
