Astronomers using the ALMA telescope have detected a molecular jet of carbon monoxide gas from comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein (C/2014 UN271), the largest comet ever discovered. Located 16.6 AU from the Sun, its activity at such a distance challenges previous understanding of comet behavior. The 140km-diameter comet, originating from the Oort Cloud, is exhibiting explosive degassing, with further gas releases expected as it approaches the Sun in 2031. This discovery offers valuable insights into the composition and activity of comets in the outer solar system.
