Russia’s diplomatic circle of friends: Taliban and North Korea in, Azerbaijan and Armenia out

Russia's recognition of the Taliban government in Afghanistan has drawn criticism. Simultaneously, Russia's alliances with Iran and North Korea are strengthening, with Iran supplying drones and North Korea providing troops for the war in Ukraine. Conversely, Russia's relationships with former allies in the South Caucasus are severely strained. Azerbaijan, after an incident involving a downed airliner, has accused Russia of covering up its role and taken retaliatory actions, including raiding Sputnik Azerbaijan's offices. Armenia, meanwhile, has frozen participation in the CSTO and is pursuing closer ties with the EU and Turkey.
